WSDOT manages the flow and the condition of assets, and assets are assigned a threshold of good repair. A performance gap is identified when the asset cannot be maintained in a state of good repair. Future maintenance and operations requires an analysis of the asset lifecycle.
Managing assets can include demand management. When traffic managers use demand management options to improve mobility performance and reliability of our assets, they delay the breakdown of our facilities, do a better job of informing travelers, and reduce the number of incidents by changing the way WSDOT operates.
Asset management encourages a long-term view, and this approach is cost-effective for the life of the project. This factors in the long–term cost to fund maintenance.
Managing assets applies to certain performance measures and metrics in the Mobility Performance Framework, as summarized in the table below. Note that not all system management tasks are focused on mobility. Additional performance measures and metrics will be developed to evaluate how WSDOT projects advance WSDOT’s goals around the environment, preservation, safety, and stewardship.
